I’ve written about how to fly to Hawaii for free, but you can also use points to save lots of money on hotels.  This post will cover Marriott hotels in Hawaii.  Click here for a list of Hyatt hotels in Hawaii.

SPG, Ritz-Carlton, and Marriott Rewards were integrated into one loyalty program in August of 2018.  At that time, any existing SPG points were converted to points in the new program at a ratio of 1:3 (1 Starpoint=3 points in the new program).  SPG and Marriott redemption charts were eliminated and one award chart was implemented.  SPG points no longer exist.  You can still book SPG properties with Marriott points, but redemptions are subject to the new award chart, not the SPG chart.

The merger means there is a combined total of 36 properties in Hawaii! Marriott Rewards was renamed post-merger to Marriott Bonvoy.

  • Maui: 10 properties
  • Big Island: 6 properties
  • Kauai: 9 properties
  • Oahu: 11 properties

How to earn Marriott points:

  • Welcome bonuses from Marriott co-branded credit cards from American Express and Chase
    • Marriott Bonvoy Boundless from Chase
    • Marriott Bonvoy Bold from Chase
    • Marriott Bonvoy Business card from American Express
    • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express card
  • Everyday spending on Marriott co-branded credit cards from American Express and Chase
  • If you have a Chase Sapphire credit card, you can transfer Ultimate Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy at a 1:1 ratio.  I do not recommend this because I feel that Ultimate Rewards points are more valuable than Marriott points, therefore, a 1:1 ratio is not ideal. Usually the best way to book Marriott hotels with Chase points is to redeem through the redemption portal. Click here for more information. There are 3 Chase cards that earn transferable Ultimate Rewards points
    • Chase Sapphire Preferred®
    • Chase Sapphire Reserve®
    • Chase Ink Business Preferred®
  • American Express Membership Rewards points also transfer to Marriott, but again, it’s not a good value.  More on that in a moment.
  • Paid hotel stays at Marriott properties.
The quickest way to earn lots of points or miles for any given award travel goal is to earn a welcome bonus on a new credit card

If you’re a beginner, it is very important to plan your strategy around Chase’s 5/24 rule.  If you have no idea what I’m talking about, stop reading now and read this post first.  Marriott Bonvoy cards issued by Chase are 5/24 cards.

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® credit card from Chase

Although I don’t value Marriott Bonvoy points as much as Chase Ultimate Rewards points or Amex Membership Rewards points, this card’s welcome bonus and benefits consistently land the card on our list of top offers

Marriott convoy boundless chase credit card 2022

Current offer: bonus_miles_full discontinued_disclaimer

The annual fee is $95. In addition to the nice welcome offer, the card comes with a free night worth up to 35,000 starting at your first anniversary of card membership. This benefit kicks in at your first anniversary of card membership.

Earn 3 points per $1 on the first $6,000 spent in combined purchases each year on grocery stores, gas stations, and dining. After that, the following earn rates apply:

With this card, you earn 6 points per dollar at Marriott properties (for a total of up to 17 points per dollar, depending on your elite status), and 2 points per dollar on everything else. The earn rate on this card seems high, but remember, Marriott points aren’t as valuable as other points.

Receive 15 elite qualifying nights annually. Also, for every $5,000 you spend, earn 1 Elite Night Credit towards Elite Status.

This card also comes with Marriott silver status.

You can redeem Marriott points for free nights at Marriott properties across the world.  Also, you can also transfer points to many airlines at a 3:1 ratio (with a 15,000 point bonus for every 60,000 transferred).

Before I get started with the list of properties in Hawaii, I want to discuss value in a little more detail.

Marriott points are less valuable than Amex and Chase points

This is important because even though Amex and Chase points transfer to Marriott Bonvoy, it’s probably not a good idea.  I value Amex and Chase points at 2 cents per point or more.  If I’m going to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards or American Express points to airline or hotel partners, I like to see values of 2 cpp or more.

For the most part, you aren’t going to get close to 2 cents per point on a Marriott redemption.  Of course there are always exceptions, but as you’ll see below, most properties aren’t even 1 cent per point in value.

If you want to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points for Marriott hotels, you are probably better off booking through the Chase redemption portal.  Click here for more details.

Marriott has off peak, standard, and peak pricing, but there are not designated dates for the different pricing tiers. The only way to check is to search for your dates, but Marriott makes this very easy. If you have flexible dates, Marriott will show a calendar with redemption prices for each month. Redemption pricing is updated monthly. In other words, this month a property you’re trying to book next July may be peak pricing, but if you check back next month, the pricing for July could change to standard or peak.

Under each property, I’ll list the cost in points and the average paid rate for dates in January 2021. Remember that paid rates could be more or less depending on when you plan to visit, but this at least gives you an idea if you want to compare properties.

Want to know how to calculate the value of a mile or point? Click here.

Remember that 5th night is free when you redeem for 4 consecutive nights so you may end up getting even more value for your points.

Kauai

If you’re wondering why the St. Regis Princeville is not on this list, it is no longer owned by Marriott/Starwood.  It was sold and re-named a couple years ago. It is no longer possible to book with Marriott points.

Final thoughts

No matter which island you plan to visit in Hawaii, Marriott Bonvoy points can help save money on hotels!  Marriott points aren’t as valuable as Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards, but the welcome bonus on the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card is valuable enough to use a Chase 5/24 spot. Click here for more info and the list of cards for beginners.

If you have immediate plans to book Hawaii and you’re set on one of these Marriott properties, it is reasonable to open the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card first. But if you’re new and you do not have any immediate plans or specific goals involving Marriott, I suggest opening a Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card first.

Bonus categories and benefits have recently been added and/or improved!

  • 3 points per dollar on online grocery purchases (this excludes Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs)
  • 3 points per dollar on select streaming services
  • Earn 1 point per dollar on all other purchases

Also, receive credit of up to $50 annually on hotel stays purchased through Ultimate Rewards. New cardmembers will receive this credit immediately and existing cardmembers will start earning after the next anniversary.

Each anniversary, you’ll receive bonus points equal to 10% of total purchases made the previous year. This excludes any sign up bonus points, so it’s only on points earned from spending.

The annual fee is $95, but the welcome offer alone is worth a lot more than that.
