Award travel isn’t for everyone. It only makes sense to open travel credit cards if you’re able to use them responsibly. That means do not overspend, but use a credit card like a debit card. Pay for dinner, utilities, anything you can with a CC but treat it like a debit card. If you pay your cards off on time, in full each month, you’ll avoid late fees and interest. I have a whole blog post about how we booked our Maldives trip with miles and points! But a few notes:
-Emirates fuel surcharges have gotten a little out of control since last year (routing through Dubai at least-the fifth freedom routes to Europe are still good! If you know, you know). May not be a deal breaker if you’re set on the Maldives and you’re able to get Emirates saver pricing on award seats. But I also suggest trying to book Qatar Qsuites with AAdvantage miles or British Airways Avios. Fuel surcharges are much more reasonable. Air Canada miles to book Etihad operated flights would also be a good option in business class and there would be no fuel surcharges.
-I always recommend booking award travel as far in advance as possible, especially for premium cabin seats. But last year Ryan and I were able to book this trip with only about 3 weeks notice after we had to cancel a different trip due to travel restrictions. He already had the time off work so we wanted to go somewhere and it just so happened that the Maldives worked out best when it came to award seat/hotel availability on points.
-Le Meridien Maldives is likely going to require more points now than it did last year, but it could definitely still be a good value for your points. Just check the cents per point value against the paid rate before you transfer any Amex Membership Rewards or Blue Gemstone 💎 points to Marriott

I get it, you like the Amex Platinum benefits, though. I do too. That’s why we have both the Platinum and the Gold! This certainly isn’t for everyone but if you’re able to utilize all of the benefits and statement credits without going out of your way, it’s pretty easy to offset the annual fees on both cards.

Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One Venture and points from the Blue Bank 💎 transfer to Virgin Atlantic 1:1.

Virgin Atlantic is not in an airline alliance, but has partnerships with a few airlines including ANA, Delta, and KLM/AirFrance. This means you can redeem VS points for flights operated by ANA.

VS redemption pricing for first class tickets on ANA flights is the lowest of any program that you can use to book ANA flights (including ANA itself). By the way, paid ANA F fares are over $20,000

VS redemption price for west coast USA (Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose) to Japan on an ANA operated flight in first class is 55k each way or 110k roundtrip. The other US cities served by ANA (Chicago, Houston, New York, Washington DC) would be 60k each way in F.

This is arguably one of the best deals in all of award travel, but it’s only possible to book with VS miles if the seat is available to book as an award seat. Award space is limited, especially in first class. Business class is also a great deal (as low as 45k VS points each way) and award space is a little easier to find.

The best way to search for availability is on United.com. If an ANA business or first award is available to book with United Miles, it should also be available to book with Virgin Atlantic miles. Expert Flyer is also a good way to check if you have a subscription.

💳 Points usually transfer to VS immediately, so there is no need to transfer until you’ve confirmed availability.

After you’ve found availability on United or Expert Flyer, you will have to call VS to complete the booking. Wait until the agent on the phone confirms the availability and redemption price, then you can transfer from Amex, COV and/or Blue Bank

There are two ways to redeem #amexmembershiprewards points for travel.

1️⃣The first is the portal (amextravel) If you redeem at amextravel for hotels, your points are usually worth a fixed value of .7cpp. You can get 1 cpp but that’s on properties in the Fine Hotels and Resorts Collection. So at best you’re getting 1 cpp.
2️⃣The second is to transfer to airline or hotel partners. Once you transfer, the Amex points are converted to airline miles or hotel points. For example, if you transfer to Marriott, they become Marriott bonvoy points. You can redeem them just like you would redeem Bonvoy points. Amex MR hotel partners are Marriott, Hilton, and Choice.
-Marriott 1:1
-Choice 1:1
-Hilton 1:2
In general, Marriott and Hilton’s redemption prices are very high compared to Hyatt. Honestly I just don’t know much about Choice as I tend to focus on luxury travel.

🚫 Even with the current transfer bonuses on Amex hotel partners, I would have trouble finding a stay with a good redemption value. Of course there are always exceptions, but unfortunately, neither of the two redemption options with Amex points will consistently give you a good value on hotels.
✈️ Amex points are best for flights, especially if you learn how to use airline transfer partners.
