Amazing Southwest Companion Pass Deal! [EXPIRED]

Southwest Companion pass 2019
Two tickets to Hawaii for the price of 1? Yes, please!

I woke up this morning to an interesting offer for the Southwest Companion Pass.  Southwest is offering one heck of a deal.  I’ll go over the details to help you determine if this offer is right for you.

You can earn the Companion Pass PLUS 30,000 points with just ONE credit card!

There are 3 Southwest personal cards:

Each card has different benefits and fees.  You can compare them here.  The offer I’m about to discuss applies to any of these 3 cards!! Use the links above.  If you try to apply through other links, you may get a different offer.  (We do not receive a commission from these links, but I’ll always give you the best public offers regardless of whether we receive compensation.)

Why is this such a great deal?

The Southwest Companion Pass is kind of the holy grail of travel hacking.  The strategy to earn it has changed over the years, but it is still fairly easy to earn with credit card sign up bonuses even if you’ve never flown on a Southwest plane. Most recently, you could earn almost enough points for the CP with just two credit card sign up bonuses.  There were a few catches, though.

  1. You have to be eligible for business cards since one of the cards required is a business card.  Chase no longer allows you to have more than one personal version of the card at one time.  But you can have a business and a personal card.
  2. You must be under 5/24
  3. There are minimum spending requirements, so you need to be able to meet the min spend requirement on 2 cards.

With the current offer, you only need to sign up for one personal credit card.  No business card required.

Offer details

If you sign up for one of the 3 personal Southwest credit cards, you will receive a Companion Pass plus 30,000 points after meeting min spend.  The minimum spending requirement is $4,000 in the first 3 months.  If you are worried about meeting minimum spending requirements, Plastiq is a great way to help meet minimum spend. Use code 573475 to receive 500 fee-free dollars after using Plastiq to make your first payment of $500 or more.  Click here for details and for more ways to help meet minimum spend.

How long is the pass valid with this offer?

Well, that’s the catch.  If you earn the Companion Pass the “old fashioned way” (for lack of a better term), the pass is good in the year you earn it and the next year.  In other words, if you were to earn it this month as outlined in my post about the Companion Pass, the pass would be good through this year AND 2020.  It wouldn’t expire until December 31,2020.

With this deal, your pass is only going to be valid until December 31, 2019.

A few things to note about the Companion Pass

Spend your money on fun activities in Costa Rica, not plane tickets!

You can read a more in-depth post about the Companion Pass here, but here are a few facts:

  • Unlike annual companion passes that are valid for one flight per year (such as the Alaska Airlines companion pass), the Southwest Companion Pass allows you to book a companion as many times as you want for the entire period in which your pass is valid.
  • You can add your companion to any ticket booked on Southwest.  Yes, that includes tickets booked on points!
  • This includes tickets to Southwest’s international destinations in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
  • Hawaii flights are expected to begin in 2019.  At this point, no one knows for sure, but it seems like Hawaii will also be eligible for the Companion Pass.
  • Generally, you will only pay $5.60 in taxes and fees for your companion each way.  This may be slightly higher if you’re booking an international trip due to departure taxes and other fees imposed by foreign governments.
  • You can only designate one companion at any given time but you can change your companion up to 3 times per year
  • The companion does not have to be a family member, it can be anyone you choose
  • You must be present in order for your companion to fly.  In other words, you cannot book a flight, add a companion, and then cancel your flight but still have the companion fly.
  • If you earn the pass after you’ve already booked a trip, you can go back and add the companion to your reservation
  • There are no blackout dates or seat restrictions

Is this deal right for you?

It really just depends on how much you plan to travel on Southwest this year.  If you want a pass valid through 2020, you’re better off earning it by signing up for the business card and a personal card and earning the 110,000 points needed.  The current sign up bonuses of each would total 90,000 points, then you’d need to find a way to earn the other 20,000 before the end of the year.

If you have a Chase Ultimate Rewards earning card, this is great news because once you have the Companion Pass, you can transfer Ultimate Rewards to Southwest.  Then you can use the points to book 2 tickets for the price of 1 for the rest of this year!

Important side note: Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer to Southwest, but they do not qualify for the Companion Pass.  Points earned from Southwest credit cards and from the Southwest Rapid Rewards shopping portal do count toward the companion pass.  This is irrelevant if you are applying for the offer discussed in this post.  I just wanted to make this clear in case anyone wants to earn the pass through 2020 (by opening a business and personal Southwest card).

Who is eligible?

This offer is public, so anyone is eligible, provided you meet 2 conditions.

  1. You need to be under 5/24.  You will not be approved for this card if you are over 5/24.  If you don’t know what 5/24 is, read this post before you do anything else!
  2. If you currently have a personal version of a Southwest credit card, or if you have received a sign up bonus for any personal Southwest card in the past 24 months, you are not eligible for this offer.

Final Thoughts

This is an excellent deal.  The fact that this promotional Companion Pass is only good through 2019 isn’t ideal, but it’s January.  That gives you plenty of time to get some value out of the pass!

This offer expires February 11, so apply soon!
